AI Summary
The Department of Defense is hosting an Industry Day for the Thayer Hall demolition and construction project at West Point on November 14, 2025. This event aims to gather input from contractors regarding project execution best practices. Attendance is limited to general contractors, and pre-registration is required by November 12, 2025. The project involves significant renovations to enhance instructional facilities while preserving historical integrity.
Update 11/12/25:
For those participating in the one-on-one meetings, the potential questions are as follows:
1.Potential Demolition – constrained by 18-month window
How would you approach demolition within an 18-month window?
How would you approach asbestos/lead abatement to save on schedule?
Considering the exterior granite walls, do you see a cost or schedule benefit to preserving the façade with a partial demo vs full demolition?
What innovative method would you recommend to remove debris (transportation method) to support the schedule?
There are complexities with utility lines. What suggestion do you have for rerouting or maintaining utility continuity during the demolition period?
Any other suggestions?
2.Have you been involved in an early contractor involvement (ECI)? Do you have any lessons learned that you’d be willing to share?
3.For a best value solicitation, do you have any suggestions related to possible selection factors for the solicitation?
UPDATE:
The event will be held at 10:00am on Nov 14 at Thayer Hall. Additional information will be provided via email to those who register for the event.
This project involves the deconstruction and reconstruction of the historic 1911 Thayer Hall at the U.S. Military Academy, replacing later additions while repairing the building’s original architectural integrity. The new facility will provide modern instructional, administrative, and support spaces, including classrooms, labs, offices, and collaboration areas, to address a significant instructional space deficit. Designed for accessibility, sustainability, and a 40-year service life, the project will integrate advanced building systems and adhere to DoD and historic preservation standards. With an anticipated construction cost exceeding $500 million, the project will modernize and expand Thayer Hall to meet contemporary academic needs and improve the overall efficiency and functionality of the Academy’s instructional facilities. The construction contract is anticipated to be awarded in FY27, with demolition beginning while final design efforts are still underway, and reconstruction expected to begin in FY28.
