    Description

The selected attorney or attorneys will be designated as indigent defense specialty attorneys (“specialty attorneys”) and will be assigned to work on homicide, first-degree felony level sex offense, and pattern of unlawful activity cases. Other indigent defense attorneys will initially be assigned to these cases at their assigned law and motion calendars. As the cases progress, a specialty attorney may be assigned based on the difficulty of the case and the likelihood of the case going to trial. If a specialty attorney is assigned to a case, the specialty attorney will be designated as first chair, with second chair assistance being provided by the indigent defense attorney who was originally assigned to the case. Specialty attorneys may be assigned to multiple cases at a time. Specialty attorneys will not be assigned to capital cases. The specialty attorney will be required to perform all duties and responsibilities of trial counsel on assigned cases as specified by law and in accordance with the rules of professional conduct governing the practice of law. Duties shall include but not be limited to reviewing evidence; communicating with and providing competent legal counsel to the defendant; attending hearings; filing motions; representing the defendant at trial; filing a notice of appeal; and any other action necessary to adequately represent the defendant, from initial appearance through case resolution. Please see RFP document for complete details and requirements.
