    NYS AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE (NYSAAH) GRANT PROGRAM - CAPITAL NYSAAH provides competitive grants to assist eligible nonprofit organizations and NYS local governments in documenting, interpreting, and preserving places and stories of historical and cultural importance to the African American experience in New York. The program is administered by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation's Division for Historic Preservation, in partnership with the New York State Commission on African American History and the New York State Department of State. Funding for this program totals $1 million and comes from a New York State appropriation to the Commission to support and promote a greater understanding of the history and achievements of African Americans and people of African descent throughout the State. CAPITAL PROJECTS: NYSAAH Capital Grant projects can support pre-development planning and design, construction, or a combination of both for existing buildings, structures, or sites that highlight the contributions and history of African Americans in New York State. Subject properties are not required to be formally listed as historic resources, but the property itself, or the organization receiving the funding, must have a mission that promotes the contributions and history of African Americans in New York State. ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS: Open to Nonprofit organizations registered in New York State and NYS local governments committed to embracing, preserving, and sharing the history, placemaking, and achievements of African Americans in New York State through targeted capital projects. HOW TO APPLY: A Pre-Application will be available on May 4, 2026 on the NYSAAH Grant Program web page. Applicants must complete a Pre-application no later than 11:59 pm on May 22, 2026 to confirm project eligibility. Upon eligibility confirmation, a full application package will be provided. INFORMATIONAL WEBINARS: Tuesday, April 28 | 10:00 A.M. - 11:30 A.M. Thursday, April 30 | 4:00 P.M. - 5:30 P.M. Interested applicants are strongly encouraged to participate in at least one of the webinars. Advance registration required. Register on the NYSAAH Grant Program web page. All applicants must be registered in the Statewide Financial System (SFS), and nonprofit organizations must be pre-qualified to do business with New York State by the full application deadline.
