The medical plan is operated as a non-ERISA governmental plan, subject to applicable federal and state regulations governing public entities.Currently, approximately 1,800 employees are enrolled in the District’s self-insured medical plans, representing a total covered population of approximately 2,600 covered lives (“belly buttons”). The District also sponsors a self-insured dental plan, administered alongside the medical program.In addition to the active employee population, the District manages benefits for approximately 500 retirees. The retiree population is largely enrolled in Medicare Supplement plans, which are administered through Union and supported via group billing arrangements.
