    Total Funding Available: $45,000

    Introduction:

The Wayne County Department of Aging and Youth invites qualified nonprofit organizations and community-based groups to apply for funding to support youth team sports. Municipalities and school districts are not eligible for youth team sports funding. Youth team sports programs are grounded in the principles of positive youth development and aim to expand local sports opportunities, particularly in communities where they are limited or under-resourced. For this application, “team sports” refers to organized physical activities in which groups of two or more compete against opposing teams. This includes sports where individuals compete on behalf of a group, such as team tennis, team golf, and racing sports like swimming or skiing. YTS funding can support programs that give youth in underserved areas the chance to learn and participate in team sports, including the instruction needed to prepare them for participation. Target populations include under-resourced communities, areas with high rates of public housing or homelessness, low-income neighborhoods or opportunity zones, marginalized groups facing greater barriers to sports participation (such as youth with disabilities, girls, transgender or gender non-binary youth, and LGBTQ+ youth), and neighborhoods with higher crime rates or struggling schools. The Department’s mission is to promote independence, dignity, health, and quality of life for all Wayne County residents, working alongside the community to offer the best services possible. All funded programs must include a competitive component in the design, ensuring that youth have opportunities to engage in structured competition. Additional components, such as promoting physical health, mental health, youth employment, and community/civic engagement, are also encouraged.
