AI Summary
California Department of Public Health seeks preventive maintenance and repair services for biological safety equipment, including biosafety cabinets, to ensure compliance with CLIA standards and protect laboratory personnel.
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH), Viral Rickettsial and Disease Laboratory (VRDL) and the CDPH Microbial Diseases Laboratory MDL, conducts research required for the diagnosis, investigation, and control of viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic diseases in California and functions as the public health laboratory for Local health jurisdictions (LHJs) that do not have public health laboratory services available locally. As part of the Department's laboratory science training program, VRDL and MDL, in conjunction with the State Training Lab (TRNL), trains local public health laboratory personnel in state-of-the-art standardized laboratory procedures. The VRDL, MDL and TRNL laboratory programs are inspected by Federal Investigators to ensure the laboratories meet all Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and must remain in compliance to maintain the required licensure for diagnostic testing. Biosafety equipment is used by microbiologists when performing all diagnostic testing. In addition, the CDPH has a responsibility to provide operational safety equipment to reduce the risk of exposure to hazardous materials for laboratorians performing testing as part of laboratories occupational health and safety program. Biological Safety Cabinets (BSC) provide an air curtain utilizing directional air flow inside the cabinet to protect laboratory personnel; in addition, air is circulated through HEPA filters to protect users from biohazardous aerosols generated inside of the chamber. The BSC creates a negative airflow up into the HEPA filter exhaust away from the laboratorian. Certain testing performed on infectious pathogens must be performed inside of the biosafety cabinet. Per CLIA, continued preventive maintenance (PM) and repairs are required and must be documented on the Programs Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) that are inspected during yearly CLIA inspections.
SLED stands for State, Local, and Education. These are solicitations issued by state governments, counties, cities, school districts, utilities, and higher education institutions — as opposed to federal agencies.
