IAF Hosts Dronathon-2026 to Advance Indigenous Unmanned Aerial Systems Development

The Indian Air Force (IAF) recently launched Dronathon-2026, a pioneering event taking place from September 14 to 16, 2026, at the Pokhran Field Firing Range in Rajasthan. This initiative aims to rigorously evaluate next-generation unmanned aerial systems (UAS) under realistic operational conditions. More than 20 Indian defense companies, along with startups, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and public sector units, participated in this hands-on assessment of UAS capabilities. The technologies showcased ranged from surveillance and reconnaissance to autonomous operations, swarm technology, electronic warfare, and counter-UAS capabilities.

In parallel with the event, the IAF unveiled its UAS Roadmap, a strategic document designed to guide innovation within the domestic defense sector. This roadmap is aligned with the broader national objective of ‘Mission Atmanirbhar Bharat’, which translates to self-reliance in defense technology.
