Maryland MVA Launches New Vehicle Registration Compliance Enforcement Initiative

Starting October 1, 2026, the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) will enhance enforcement measures as part of its 'Plate Where You Live' campaign. This initiative comes as a response to the growing number of residents with out-of-state license plates who fail to register their vehicles in Maryland within the required 60-day period after establishing residency. As part of the enforcement mechanism, the MVA will impose stricter penalties, including daily fines and possible vehicle impoundment. In an effort to raise awareness about these compliance requirements, the MVA has already mailed out approximately 79,000 courtesy letters to drivers with out-of-state plates, urging them to register their vehicles before the enforcement becomes active. However, should they fail to comply, they will incur fines of $7 per day, with a cap that could lead to a total of $420 per vehicle. Should any vehicle remain improperly registered after an additional 120 days, local jurisdictions will be notified, potentially resulting in civil actions that could include booting or towing of the vehicles, as well as other punitive measures.
