MCTSSA to Deploy Advanced Tactical Communications System for Marines

The Marine Corps Tactical Systems Support Activity (MCTSSA) is pushing forward with the deployment of the Expeditionary Warfare Operations Kit (EWOK), a cutting-edge modular tactical communications system aimed at bolstering the operational capabilities of Marine Corps units. This initiative is part of the broader Project Dynamis, designed to modernize military communication strategies by integrating smarter and more resilient radios, along with networked handheld devices. The goal is to enhance the interoperability among joint and coalition forces, which is increasingly critical in today’s dynamic battlefield environment.

The need for advanced communication technologies has become paramount as military action evolves. According to Rick Bobst, Deputy Director of the Warfighter Support Division at MCTSSA, traditional systems have often slowed response times during engagements. He stated, "In past conflicts, information from the front line would pass from the unit in contact with the enemy, through their leadership to the joint environment... The response always took time." This delay could cost lives; therefore, creating a real-time data network where front-line Marines can act like sensors is essential. EWOK aims to transform battalions into interconnected units that can provide instant updates and intelligence to joint commands.

EWOK utilizes the Sensitive but Unclassified - Encrypted (SBU-E) protocol, allowing frontline troops to establish dedicated Tactical Mission Networks (TMN) to meet modern communication needs. This collaboration between MCTSSA and the Special Operations Command (SOCOM) represents the culmination of ongoing technological advancement that supports efficient battlefield operations, including the integration of unmanned systems. Throughout the past year, the EWOK has been piloted under Project Dynamis, showcasing its potential in providing secure, commercial-grade tactical networks.

As initial deployments are planned for upcoming training exercises at Camp Pendleton, California, several Marine units are set to participate, including elements from V22, V25, 1st ANGLICO, CLB2, 3rd LAR, CTC-1, and 1st Recon. This summer's Service Level Training Exercise (SLTE) will serve as a critical platform to gather user feedback and assess the effectiveness of the EWOK system in real-world scenarios. MCTSSA’s proactive approach to training with these new systems is aimed at refining future force development and acquisition strategies, ensuring that Marines are better equipped for combat in multi-domain environments.
