North Dakota Communities Earn Awards for Economic Development Projects

In a recent celebration of innovation and economic resilience, North Dakota communities were recognized at the 2026 Mid-America Economic Development Council Annual Awards for their exemplary projects. Four significant awards spotlight North Dakota's commitment to nurturing regional economies through diverse initiatives ranging from energy resilience to cultural tourism. These awards bring vital attention to various opportunities for contractors and service providers aiming to engage in the state's economic ecosystem.

The North Dakota Department of Commerce has been instrumental in fostering such initiatives that underscore the state’s growth and development. The awards, which were presented at the recent Mid-America EDC ceremony from August 31 to September 2, 2026, highlight collaborative efforts among local governments, businesses, and community organizations. The state’s focus on placemaking and energy resilience not only strengthens community bonds but also opens the door for increased procurement activity in these sectors.

One of the most notable projects awarded was the Citizen’s Alley + Downtown Minot Activation Strategy from Minot. This initiative has taken an underused urban space and transformed it into a vibrant community hot spot, showcasing the power of creative placemaking. Brekka Kramer, President/CEO of the Minot Area Chamber EDC, noted, “Citizen’s Alley has become something truly special for downtown Minot, and it’s wonderful to see that work receive recognition at a multi-state level.” This project illustrates how effective community engagement can yield significant localized benefits, making it a model for other cities aiming for similar transformations.

Energy projects were also recognized, particularly the Coal Creek Station managed by Rainbow Energy Center, which was honored for overcoming adversities posed by shifting energy markets. Jessica Bell, Vice President of External Affairs for Rainbow Energy Center, stated, “This recognition reflects the dedication of our employees and partners who worked together to create a strong future for Coal Creek Station.” This highlights the critical role that innovation and community engagement play in maintaining and advancing North Dakota's position as a leader in the energy sector.

Furthermore, the Applied Digital project in Ellendale earned the coveted Project of the Year award. This project exemplifies how technological innovation and community partnerships can generate considerable economic impact. Ellendale Mayor Don Flaherty emphasized the significance of this project, stating, “Applied Digital’s investment represents a turning point for our community, bringing new energy, new jobs, and new opportunities.” Such technological initiatives hint at the growing opportunities for contractors skilled in digital infrastructure and energy technology.
