What are PSC Codes?
Product and Service Codes (PSC) are four-character alphanumeric codes used by the federal government to classify the products and services acquired through procurement. Every federal contract in SAM.gov and FPDS is tagged with a PSC code that identifies what the government is buying.
PSC codes are divided into two major categories: Product codes (starting with a number, e.g., 1005 for Guns) and Service codes (starting with a letter, e.g., R408 for Program Management). They are maintained by the General Services Administration (GSA) and published in the PSC Manual.
For government contractors, knowing the correct PSC code helps identify relevant opportunities, understand market competition, and comply with federal procurement reporting requirements through FPDS-NG.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between PSC and NAICS codes?
NAICS codes classify what a business does (the industry), while PSC codes classify what the government is buying (the product or service). A single contract will have both a NAICS code (identifying the contractor's industry) and a PSC code (identifying the deliverable). Use our NAICS lookup tool for industry classification.
How are PSC codes structured?
PSC codes are 4 characters long. Product codes start with a number (00–99) and correspond to Federal Supply Classes. Service codes start with a letter (A–Z) followed by a sub-category letter and 2 digits. For example, R408 means “Professional Services: Program Management/Support.”
How do PSC product codes relate to NSN codes?
The numeric PSC product codes are identical to Federal Supply Classes (FSC), which form the first 4 digits of every National Stock Number (NSN). If you work with DIBBS or DLA procurement, the FSC/PSC code tells you the supply category. Use our NSN lookup tool to browse by Federal Supply Class.
Where does PSC data come from?
PSC codes are maintained by the General Services Administration (GSA) and published in the official PSC Manual, available at acquisition.gov. Our database reflects the April 2025 edition.
